What is CPWE?

Texas faces a widespread shortage of psychiatrists, particularly those trained to care for children and youth. The Community Psychiatry Workforce Expansion (CPWE) program addresses this critical need by funding psychiatry training opportunities in community mental health settings.

CPWE is anchored in partnerships between the health-related institutions (HRIs) of the Consortium and community mental health care providers, including local mental health authorities (LMHAs).

By expanding psychiatry training across the state, the CPWE program:

Directly increases the number of Texas-trained psychiatry residents and child and adolescent psychiatry fellows who work in the public mental health system upon completion of their residencies.
Gives the next generation of psychiatric clinicians hands-on experience delivering care in community mental health systems.
Reduces wait times for care.
Reduces the number of designated mental health professional shortage areas.
